08.08.06 singapore fireworks festival

this is the second one out of the 4 this year… and i already missed one, and i missed one today, and most probably tomorrow as well, coz got pcps gathering... so i can only go for this one, which is actually qutie sad, given the fact that i managed to go for all of the displays 2 years ago... the worst is yet to come, coz the singapore team who put up the display always stick to the same old style, with red and white fireworks in sync with singapore 爱国歌曲, which can be quite xian after 3 years of the same stuff...

nevertheless, i did not want to miss this one coz this is the only one i can make it... befroe that was the national day celebrations in school... actually the celebrations were quite xian, coz only musicals presented by the 4 facs (again...) and the only exciting part was the performances put together by this american band called "carpenter tools"... they were actually quite pro, and they can sing quite well... one of their members even attempted 童话 by 光良, and it sounded qutie comfortable... it's quite difficult to find almost a thousand people to listen to someone sing in a humid, hot place such as the hall...

after that, our class (well, only less than half of us) went to plaza singapura to catch the movie "the lake house"... went there to have lunch first at yoshinoya... i tried the salmon bento with garlic rice... it tasted a bit odd and traces of butter could be found... tastes really weird... maybe i shouldn't have ordered garlic rice in the first place... then off to gv plaza for the movie... quite touching, seeing 2 people from different times meeting each other at last where the woman had to wait for him for 2 years, and the man had to wait for 4 years... the timeline is a bit confusing, but at least i understood what was going on... after the movie, we went on to john little to get a teachers' day present... 暂时卖个关子, i wouldn't reveal until that day arrives... XD...

then simpson, geok han, jun yan and i left for the fireworks display... qiwen and some other st. nicks people already headed to the esplanade to book a place... then we headed there... interestingly enough, i actually added to my list of annoying singaporeans... over at the esplanade, it was freakingly crowded and the crowd could hardly move, even though it was like an hour before the display started... at this drinks stall which also sold cup corns and had many corns around the stall as decorations, we tried to get into the area where everyone was sitting down waiting, and qiwen and company were already there... we tried to squeeze our way through, coz there was a "barrier" between the pathway and the seating ground... then here comes annoying singaporean no. 1: she was standing near a tree where there was still a little space for her to stand on, and she didn't... then i asked her if she could move there, and she refused... i somewhat talk over with her in a kind manner and she ignored me... when i turned around, she actually said that i had no manners... now, who's the one with no manners, seriously i have no idea, coz annoying not equals to no manners... i went another route to get into the area and i managed to squeeze through like after 15 mins...

the fireworks started, and it was quite spectular... the only problem with that display was actually the overuse of the colours red and white... yes, national day is the following day, but it's a bit xianz... furthermore, the theme for the display is actually "our city of colours", so i dun really see the colours... the display lasted for around 12 mins... after the display, the crowd started to disperse... then here comes annoying singaporeans no. 2 to x, whereby x is a positive integer more than 20: this whole group of malays were in one straight line, and they were bulldozing their way through the crowd which was already quite stagnant... not that i'm trying to be racist (and i'm not a racist), it's quite uncivilized to behave like this...

09.08.06 national day parade 2006 - our global city our home

this year's ndp is the final one in the national stadium which will make way for a new sports hub... waste money lar, the stadium 还好好的，拆掉干吗??? anywayz, it's a pity that i didn't get the ticket to the parade itself, so i had to carry the tv (抱电视) to watch the parade's live telecast... the stage design a bit the simple, by temasek poly students... it's quite ok lar, just that it looked quite empty, like nothing over there, not like the others where there were more features presented on the stage... i saw the stage during syf, and i didn't expect that it would be that simple... the telecast was stupid, and stupid throughout the years, coz they always show advertisements during the pre-parade segment... it's very disapoointing, considering the fact that this stupid tradition has been done year in year out... that's why i prefer to be at the parade...

no comments about the parade segment, though i heard some criticisms from a few people that the marching was quite 乱 and some of them could not catch up with their mates, making the whole thing quite messy... the show segment was actually a disappointment, coz the concept is about the same as ndp03 and ndp04... the same projection was done on the field, though different patterns... the 2nd and 3rd act were exact copies of previous ndps, and the grand finale was a product of the mitosis of ndp03, where the theme song singer is being raised to a height and projection falls on pieces of cloth, showing the words "home" and flashing the singapore flag which looks exactly the same... in general, the show segment is starting to become very xianz, with the content almost overlapping (and some already overlapped)... the only excitement is the fireworks, but this year's a bit boring, coz the patterns about the same throughout the 3 mins... it's only the low-level fireworks which actually caught my attention...
